The Numbers

Below are some numbers I found, and want you think think about them. I still that its a great business and anyone with some knowledge, AND a PLAN can do it but look at this:

  • Afternic has over 23 million domain listings, making it one of the largest domain marketplaces globally.
  • Sedo hosts over 18 million domain listings and facilitates more than 3,500 domain transactions per month.

So you hope for one in 3500!!!?? Your odds are worse than awful. Lets say you just have 12 domains, the odds of you selling one a month in that crowd is insane. Now you can say so many are over priced, or just expensive. You can say that so many are just bad domain names. And you can have an account at both places, but your name will only point to one place.

I did the numbers of the total number of .com names possible, had to get a friend for help. The numbers were so so LARGE. Names can be 64 long, so you start putting powers to the numbers, its more than the world needs. We have 1000 other extensions, in terms past TLD’s CLD’s and whatever else terms.

So lets say, a third is expensive, justified or not. Then lets say a third are just bad domains (and perhaps expensive. So you have a good .com priced at a fair price or even a great price. That still leaves your name out there in 6 million. So your odds are better, not its in of 3500 in six million…..bottom line is your need to have some damn good domains, or other ways to promote them.

So you have 12 names, priced correctly and exact match names even, one in 3500, 12 months in a row!!!

The probability of the event occurring

12 times in a row is approximately

4.73×10-444.73 cross 10 to the negative 44 power4.73×10−44.

This is my get a plan, and maybe talking to self part. It doesnt seem if you have more than a hand ful of names the odds go against you. I’ll get more into this a bit later, but remember the hard part is selling. You need a good plan.
